Enabling learner progression into and within higher education

QAA has been commissioned by Medr (the Commission for Tertiary Education and Research) to explore effective practice across the Welsh tertiary sector in developing initiatives to support learners progress into higher level programmes and better support their ability to learn.

The project is gathering examples of good practice that highlight how colleges and universities are currently preparing level 3 learners for higher education, supporting new HE students as they begin their studies, helping level 4 and 5 students progress to higher levels, and supporting those joining level 5 or 6 programmes.

Good Practice in Student Transitions to HE

We’ve gathered a range of case studies from across the sector, highlighting current good practice in student transitions into higher education. These include examples from individual providers as well as collaborative initiatives between partners. Many of the case studies include reflections on impact, offering insight into what works and why.

Student perceptions of enhancement

QAA Cymru was commissioned by HEFCW (replaced on 1 August 2024 by Medr) to conduct a study to capture how enhancement of the student learning experience is perceived by students at Welsh providers. The study comprised a series of 12 focus groups involving 40 students based at three further education colleges, seven higher education institutions and two alternative providers. The key findings and recommendations from the study can be seen in the report below.

Collaborative enhancement

QAA Cymru was delighted to host a lively webinar on 21 May 2024 to share experiences of collaborative enhancement working across the UK. The webinar formed a part of a Higher Education Funding Council of Wales (HEFCW) funded QAA project, exploring collaborative enhancement; the benefits and challenges of collaborative working, including consideration of any issues working across UK borders; and the relationships between college and university partners in tertiary projects. You can find a summary of the key discussion points below.
